Since the launch in 2012, the Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ platform has been renowned for its driving pleasure. Lightweight feel and a responsive chassis make it fantastic option for a B road blast and track day work, whilst being user friendly enough to be used daily and covering a high amount of mileage per year.
We at Tuning Developments have been involved with the GT86 BRZ since it’s release and run our own Toyota GT86 as a development/test car. This car features a host of the parts that can be found on our webstore and has been the backbone of the progression in a lot of the items we now offer for sale.
Tuning Developments can help GT86 BRZ owners with a wide range of services, from basic servicing and fault finding right through to turbo conversions and engine rebuilds.

GT86-BRZ Bolt On Tuning
GT86-BRZ Aspirated Tuning
Forced induction is not for everybody, with this in mind we put together many years ago our famous NA Tuning Package. This package releases a huge amount of extra power throughout the mid range area of between 3000 and 5000 RPM, along with healthy gains above this RPM right to the redline.
The package includes an upgraded air filter into the stock air intake (we find this works extremely well), upgraded overpipe, upgraded manifold/header and also a remap via the excellent ECUTeK tuning suite. This includes the RaceROM features allowing for 4 switchable maps via the cruise control stalk and has additions such as Launch control, Flat foot shift, Auto blip on downshift and valet mode. This does not remove the function of the cruise control nor alter its operation in anyway.
We also offer a choice of manifold/header for the GT86 BRZ, we offer equal length (EL) to give off a traditional 4 cylinder in line exhaust note, versus unequal length (UEL) to give off the classic Subaru boxer burble much like the Impreza models.
This is a package that can performed in just over half a day, therefore can be done while you wait. The vehicle is ran on the dyno before and also after tuning and the differences are night and day. General gains with this package are between 15 bhp and 25bhp throughout the midrange along with 25lb.ft and 40lb.ft torque through the same area. This is a very popular package as even for just a daily driven GT86 or BRZ it transforms the drive of the car.

GT86-BRZ Forced Induction Tuning
To really transform the Toyota GT86 Subaru BRZ platform, forced induction is the way to go! We at Tuning Developments can offer our inhouse developed and manufactured turbo kit on a true drive-in, drive-out basis. We also work with supercharger options from the likes of Edelbrock, Cosworth and HKS to name a few.
Tuning Developments Turbo Kit – Stage 1 – 280hp
Our baseline stage 1 turbo kit boosts the GT86 BRZ up from a base output from our Dyno Dynamics Rolling Road of around 185hp, up to between 270 & 290hp. This can be done on the factory clutch so long as it is in good mechanical health. This gives the end result of a GT86 BRZ that drives very much like a factory vehicle, yet goes much better when asked!
A moderate 5psi / 0.35bar of boost is added via the Precision turbo that is housed within our turbo kit install. Torque is massively improved giving a much more effortless feel to the drive and allows the driver to ride through the much improved vast band of torque opposed to feeling the need to always drop into a lower gear when trying to make moderate progress.
At 4000 rpm for example, we generally see an increase of 75hp and 90lb.ft over the factory car! With all this extra performance, fuel economy when driven sensibly can still be retained and over 40mpg with the turbo kit installed is far from being uncommon.

Tuning Developments Turbo Kit – Stage 2 – 330hp
For those that are a little more power hungry, our stage 2 upgrade adds in additional fuel support by means of upgraded port injectors and an upgraded fuel pump kit. A larger MAP sensor is supplied along with an upgraded clutch kit. We also add electronic boost control to then allow switchable boost settings to be used depending on the user’s choice.
Torque is tailored to protect the stock internals of the GT86 BRZ FA20 engine, this gives a lovely tractable drive and the power just keeps arriving the harder the engine revs up the RPM band. It delivers a deceiving amount of progress out on the road. This level of tune is the most we go to with a customer’s factory engine without then upgrading engine internals to go further. Our developments GT86 makes 370hp whilst on the factory internals. Almost exactly double what it left the factory with.
Tuning Developments Turbo Kit – Stage 3 – 400hp+
If the region of 330hp simply won’t cut it, Tuning Developments Stage 3 turbo upgrade goes further again, this time upgrading the engine internals to handle extra boost pressure and thereafter, horsepower and torque.
We at Tuning Developments remove and strip down the FA20 engine found in the GT86 BRZ, then replace the conrods and pistons for forged items. Engine bearings are replaced with performance items alongside oil pump upgrades and oil system working. Cylinder case fasteners along with cylinder head fasteners are also upgraded to take further stress alongside aftermarket steel headgaskets.
Genuine Threebond engine sealant is used to mirror the factory to avoid leaks. The renowned issues surrounding valve springs issues on the GT86 BRZ are also removed with uprated valve springs used as part of the engine build process.
The engine is then re-installed back into the vehicle and is then subject to a bedding in process on our rolling road. Multiple oil and filter changes occur during this period and frequent inspections carried out to ensure all is as intended.
Once the engine is bedded in, the mapping process can occur and 400hp is easily attainable with very moderate levels of boost. This makes the GT86 BRZ a very seriously capable vehicle and puts it on par and in some cases, above a lot of exotic vehicles.
