Tuning Developments Turbo Kit for Toyota GR86 and Gen 2 Subaru BRZ. A true drive in, drive out service.
With the vast success of our GT86/BRZ turbo kit conversion package, the GR86 was inevitable for us here at Tuning Developments to get involved with. Having spent time developing and fine tuning the aspirated aspect of tuning. It was time to make a start on our Turbo Kit!
With the FA24 having 20% larger displacement we rechose our turbo selection for this kit as to not give too much low end torque as to upset the power delivery and therefore balance and drive of the excellent GR86 platform.
Having quickly realised there are lots of subtle differences between the GT86 and GR86, it became apparent a bespoke kit would be required and we unfortunately couldn’t utilise our existing Turbo Kit. This kit is also available as equal length (EL) or unequal length (UEL) to give you the choice of which exhaust note you would like the car to make.
Our GR86 in standard form made a very healthy 233hp and 189lb.ft. With our experience of the chassis from the GT86/BRZ we knew that this is capable of dealing with considerably more power than this without spoiling the drive, so long as the power is delivered in a linear fashion.
Our stage1/base kit for the GR86 takes power output upto over 340hp and 300lb.ft of torque. Over 100 increase in horsepower and torque whilst at a very modest 5psi of boost. This really does transform the car and with its lightweight design translates into a car that really should not be as quick as it is in the real world when looking at a dyno plot.
Delivery is smooth, urgent and as you can see from the dyno sheets is immediately available. When driving out in the real world the car pulls and pulls all the way to the redline. The midrange jump in torque makes general acceleration much, much easier and feels almost effortless. The tendency to drive in the next gear up is apparent quickly after getting behind the wheel.
Fuel economy is a thing often forgotten about or something that is to be accepted to be worse off when modifying a car. When driving sensibly however, this turbo package does not harm the fuel economy and in some cases will actually improve it, a positive when comparing to supercharging.

We are already well along with our stage 2 upgrade from this package, adding some extra hardware to the package and more tuning that then increases power further to over 400hp and 330lb.ft torque. Delivery is again smooth and linear as can be seen in the dyno plots.
This gives a power to weight ratio of over 310hp/tonne which is higher than for example a G87 BMW M2. This upgrade will be available as an addon to our existing turbo kit owners or as an outright purchase when initially having a turbo kit installed.

Please Note: We recommend customers to have an aftermarket exhaust system along with 2nd GPF/Decat pipe and overpipe to allow for maximum performance gains. These are available in house and at a discounted “supplied and fitted” cost when ordered with a turbo kit.
