Tuning Developments NA Tuning Package for Toyota GR86.

Tuning Developments have been working with the popular GT86/BRZ FA20 platform since 2012. Having had huge amounts of success in that market, the transition to the newer, FA24 GR86 platform was inevitable.

Much the same as the predecessor, we at Tuning Developments run our own in-house demo GR86 that we have used to design, test and prove our products before they go to market. We started by giving our 2022 GR86 a shakedown to feel how it drives ‘as it comes’ from Toyota.

The verdict was a very enjoyable chassis much like the GT86, with more power throughout RPM range thanks for the extra engine displacement. Following this, dyno testing in standard trim confirms this, with our own car making 233hp and 189lb.ft peak on our in-house rolling road.

We did take note that the GR86 does also still have a ‘torque dip’ however this is a smaller dip than that found on the GT86. Most noticeable between on the GR86 between 4000 and 4750 rpm.

We got to work with the ECUTeK tuning suite and without any hardware changes were able to extract a small amount of extra power but unfortunately were not able to remove the torque dip. We designed our GR86 header/exhaust manifold which is based off our very popular GT86/BRZ setup.

Once installed and back onto the dyno, we found extra power and torque all throughout the rev range, a K&N panel filter inside the OEM airbox was also then added, putting our car upto a peak of 253hp and 208lb.ft. This does not tell the full story however. We have now managed to also remove the torque dip and as an example, at 4500rpm we are now making 25hp and 35lb.ft torque more than the standard car.

This lift in power and torque all over the curve translates into an even stronger drive from our GR86. With the lightweight aspect of the vehicle combined with the power delivery, it now covers ground remarkably well for something with ‘only’ 250hp.

On top of all this, a popular talking point with our customers with the GR86 has been the throttle pedal issue. In that it is simply too sharp for many people. We have worked very hard here at Tuning Developments with our own GR86 to develop our own throttle pedal strategies that smoothen out the throttle pedal input to make it more linear like a traditional non-electronic pedal. This is something that can be added into our tuning package at the customers request at no extra cost.
